after a summer of stuffing my face and drinking up many storms, it is now time to pay the piper. i’ll be paying him back with countless cardio sessions on the treadmill and elliptical machines, sit ups, sit ups and more sit ups, topped off with weight lifting.
as of yesterday, i weighed 159.7lbs. my goal is to be under 150lbs by december 14th. it’s going to be a long, hard battle, as the pounds just don’t come off like they used when i was 20. don’t get me wrong, i don’t think i’m fat per se, but i do think that i’ve definitely been hauling a few extra pounds around with me lately. hopefully, hockey, eating healthier coupled with better portion control, and a new gym membership will allow me to achieve my goal in no time.
working out at a gym is probably one of my least favourite things in the world, mostly because i know the only reason i am there is because i sit at a desk all day. however, our new membership at theĀ steve nash sports club should keep me interested and motivated enough to want to be there everyday. another bonus is that it’s also just around the corner from my office, so hopefully, i’ll be able to get some lunch hour work out sessions in, starting with one tomorrow. i’m going to try a lunch time spin class, and then hit up an evening yoga session with crystal tomorrow. i’ve never done yoga at a gym or studio before, mostly because i think it’s going to suck and i hate the feeling of stretching. crystal has been bugging me to try it forever, so i will tomorrow, i finally will. god knows, i could definitely benefit from more core strength.
competition in the cell phone market is already starting to heat up in a way that is benefitting customers. lately, i’ve been seeing a lot more plans for under $20/month being advertised in the dailyrags. the one that caught my eye recently was the $17.50/mth killer fido plan from fido.
when i switched to fido in july for the iPhone, i signed up for the $30/month fido to fido plus voice plan with the following features:
150 daytime minutes
50 bonus minutes (with a 3 year contract)
unlimited evenings and weekends from 7pm
unlimited local calling between fido and rogers subscribers
per second billing
unlimited incoming text messages
this actually seemed to work for me quite well, other than i was paying a premium for the fido to fido and rogers piece, but, since i work 9-5, most of my calling is done after 5, and i didn’t really get to make much use of the fido to fido/rogers part. i called fido up to see if i would qualify for the plan, and i did, so the CSR made the change for me. since yesterday was also the last day of my billing cycle, the plan went into effect at midnight last night.
the new plan means:
i pay less (with taxes, i’m saving about $14/month)
have the same amount daytime minutes
have the same per second billing
evenings now start at 5pm instead of 7pm, which rocks.
last week, apple took the wraps off it’s newest line of ipods with updates to the classic, nano and touch. the updates were more or less small incremental changes, with no major changes… with one exception - Genius, which is also a part of the new iTunes 8.
Genius has two parts - playlists and sidebar.
Genius playlists allows you to create awesome playlists instantaneously. once you enable Genius, your library information is sent to apple (anonymously) and analzed. once the analysis is completed, you simply select a song in your library, click on the genius button (in the lower right hand side) and Genius makes a new playlist of 25, 50 or 100 songs. it’s perfect for when you’re in a certain mood and what an entire playlist of similar music, or people who have tons of music and want to rediscover some of the hidden gems in their library, all within literally seconds.
Genius sidebar integrates with the iTunes music store and allows it make recommendations, preview and buy them. i haven’t tried this feature out, but I have recently been looking for more ways to find new music, so i’m also quite excited about this feature as well.
finally, also released last friday was iphone/ipod touch firmware 2.1, which adds support for making genius playlists right on your iphone or ipod touch when you’re on the go - shaweet! a little gem included in the update which hasn’t been widely mentioned, is the new ability to go to the previous song on your iphone by clicking the switch on the included earbuds 3 times. nice touch, apple!
one of my new co-workers had a very cool background on her desktop, so i asked her what it was, because it was very neat-o. it looked like some sort of anime character, but was very intriguing at the same time. apparently, it was a nudibranch, or a toxic “sea slug”.
today, said co-worker sent me a link to the entire series created and photographed by david doubilet for national geographic. i also found a pretty cool flickr set of nudibranchs as well.
so you may or may not know (depending if you wear a propeller hat or not) that jerry seinfeld is the new “spokesperson” for microsoft (even though he used a mac on his show).
anyway, the first commercial starring jerry seinfeld and bill gates has been released. if you can understand it, can you please explain what the hell is going on? i don’t get it.
