3G iphone is here!

Apple iPhonetoday steve jobs unveiled the 3G iphone at WWDC ‘08 and made it official that the iphone will be arriving in canada on july 11th through rogers or fido. the last piece of the puzzle left to be revealed are the plans that rogers and fido will offer for the phone. I have high hopes that a decent data plan will be available so that i can take full advantage of the data features, but then again, this is canada and we seem to like to pay more for everything here.

while i am happy that the new iphone has better battery life (up to 300 hrs on standby, 5 hrs talk on 3G, 10  talk on 2G), GPS, automatic geotagging of photos and 3rd party apps, i was disappointed to find out that they neglected to upgrade the camera and instead stuck with the current 2MP still camera. granted, the photos from the iphone’s camera aren’t that bad, especially when you compare them to other camera phone pics.

either way, i am very excited to be finally getting my own iphone, especially after my experience in washington state this weekend with my bell prepaid phone.

it was a pretty lackluster release for a WWDC though if you ask me.

    - where’s the video chat?
    - where’s the true 3G speeds?

I was hoping more from the developer conference. This is more like something that should have been released at a consumer-conference. At least there’s a sneak peak at “Snow Leopard” and the new SDK.

  2. there definitely are still a few things missing - but really, would you use video chat? where? on the bus? i hate talking on the bus, let alone holding a phone out to capture me on video.

also, don’t the 3G speeds depend largely on the network? is it that the iphone doesn’t support true 3G (what is true 3G anyway?) or that AT&T’s network doesn’t. we’ll be using rogers here anyway, so we’ll have to see what the performance is like on the rogers network.

i agree the keynote is not really aimed at developers, it’s more of a media circus than anything - a good chance for uncle steve to get up on stage and apply his reality distortion field and get the media to give him a whack of free press. it works every time too.

one thing to keep in mind though, they did chop the price of the phone, so you can’t really complain too much about that. $299 for the 16GB version? sweet.

  3. oh, and there is also the whole mobile me thing as well, which is pretty cool, if not a bit late.

A pretty lackluster release indeed! There was no mention of Apple’s intention to provide full-support for Soulja Boy ringtones.

I didn’t know it was available through FIDO also! That’s good news because I just signed a 2-year deal with them, and I thought I’d have to wait until my contract was up before switching to Rogers for the iphone.

  5. hey you! happy birthday… welcome to the club..
